Wildfires can happen at any time. It is crucial for Mormon Lake residents living near natural areas, known as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), to be prepared before a fire happens. Individuals can take steps to make their property and neighborhood safer from wildfire. Most human-caused fires are accidental and related to careless disposal of hot coals, ashes, cigarettes, or sparks from equipment. According to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 87 and 96 percent of wildfires are human-caused. The national Firewise USA® recognition program provides resources to help homeowners learn how to adapt to living with wildfire. The collaborative approach encourages neighbors to work locally to prevent property loss and save lives.
